Kobelco has a reputation for providing Fuel Gas Compressors with robust consistency and efficiency. As a result, our compressors are coupled with all major Gas Turbine Types, including GE, Mitsubishi, Alstom, Siemens, Rolls-Royce, Pratt&Whitney and Solar. To date, over 320 sets of KOBELCO Screw Gas Compressors have been supplied to gas turbines.
Experience has taught us that the screw compressor is the most suited to gas turbine applications for the following reasons:
1. Greater Reliability and Availability:
By Design, the Screw Compressor has fewer moving parts and offers smooth operation under any conditional variations such as frequent start/stop operations, gas composition changes, pressure changes, load change, etc. The mere nature of the design of the screw compressor and its track record in the market proves it to be more robust and with significantly fewer failure issues. This is evident when almost all clients choose not to have a spare compressor in their configuration
2. Less Maintenance:
Significantly Less Maintenance (the Mechanical Seal is the only wearing part). Unlike reciprocating compressors, there are no valves, piston rings, rider rings, cylinder liners, piston rods, etc, = Longer Overhaul Interval (3 to 4 years) whereas reciprocating compressors may average 1 year.
3. Low Noise = 85 dbA at 3 feet:
Due to its inherent reduced noise and high frequency, the Screw Compressor is easy to attenuate by way of small sound walls and/or sound jackets that can be applied to the compressor itself (85 dBA at 3 feet). As for Reciprocating Compressors, it is difficult to attenuate the noise due to the number of moving parts which increase the noise and low frequency. Additionally, sound walls must be built all the way around the large footprint of the reciprocating compressor.
4. Power Savings During Actual Operating Conditions:
Screw Compressors can save power significantly via the built-in slide valve in case of:
a) Suction Gas Pressure Fluctuations
b) Gas Turbine Load Changes
Reciprocating Compressors cannot save power as easily compared to the Screw Compressor. In the case of turndown, reciprocating compressors become less efficient as their turndown capabilities are step-wise whereas screw compressors with built-in slide valves are able to linearly turn down from 100% to 20%. This allows the screw compressor to take advantage of power savings even with the slightest change in conditions
5. No Major Vibration or Pulsation Issues:
The rotation of intermeshing screws do not produce the same heavy vibrations like those of large pistons moving back and forth at high speeds. Additionally, the stream of steadily discharged gas is more uniform and not released in continuous powerful blows
6. Lower Construction Costs:
The Screw Compressor configuration is more compact and occupies a smaller footprint which means less piping, less concrete, less transportation, etc. Likewise, the reduced vibration would require a less robust concrete base to absorb the operational shock
7. Environmentally Friendly:
Negligible Drain, No Need to Add Lube Oil During Operation, Oil Carry Over less than 0.1ppmwt
